1. Descision

This course is established by Dean 2022-02-16. The course syllabus is approved by Head of Department of Spatial Planning 2022-03-01 and applies from 2022-08-29.

2. Entry requirements

Admission to the course requires a planning-relevant Bachelor degree. English 6.

3. Objective and content

3.1 Objective

The course provides a review and a critical assessment of current sustainability challenges in a global and global south perspective.

3.2 Content

The course introduces the fundamentals of sustainability and associated challenges for effecting sustainability transitions from Global as well as the Global South perspectives. The course establishes and expands on overview and concepts of sustainability and the potential contributions in the energy and mobility sector, the role of urban planning, aspects of governance and participatory planning and finally global and local action impediments for such transitions. The contents focus on the needs and challenges of cities and regions and also provides an overview of measures and the processes of decision making for sustainability transitions.

4. Learning outcomes

The following learning outcomes are examined in the course:

4.1. Knowledge and understanding

On completion of the course, the student will be able too:

  • Describe and problematise different perspectives on sustainability
  • Describe and problematise different impediments to sustainability transitions at different locations and spatial scales

4.2. Competence and skills

On completion of the course, the student will be able too:

  • Identify and analyse different perspectives on sustainability
  • Identify and analyse different impediments and opportunities to sustainability transitions at different locations and spatial scales

4.3. Judgement and approach

On completion of the course, the student will be able too:

  • Evaluate sustainability and sustainability transition issues from different actor and stakeholder perspectives

The course will be graded A Excellent, B Very good, C Good, D Satisfactory, E Sufficient, FX Failed result, a little more work required, F Fail.

The information before the start of the course states the assessment criteria and make explicit in which modes of examination that the learning outcomes are assessed.

An examiner can, after consulting the Disability Advisor at BTH, decide on a customized examination form for a student with a long-term disability to be provided with an examination equivalent to one given to a student who is not disabled.
