1. Descision
This course is established by School of Planning and Media Design, Spatial Planning 2013-01-08. The course syllabus is approved by Head of Department of Spatial Planning 2026-03-25 and applies from 2026-03-25.
2. Entry requirements
Bachelor (first cycle) degree of 180 higher education credits including at least 30 higher education credits in planning; alternatively a bachelor (first cycle) degree of 180 higher education credits and an additional 30 higher education credits in planning or equivalent subjects.
3. Objective and content
3.1 Objective
The aim of the course is to introduce the programme and to acquaint the students with the structure and focus of the programme. Furthermore, the course aims to introduce strategic spatial planning and to critically examine different perspectives and concepts that are recurrently used in the programme’s courses and projects.
3.2 Content
The course introduces and critically examines various perspectives and concepts that are recurrently used in the programme’s courses and projects. In addition to theoretical studies, the course includes case studies of strategic planning at different levels. This also includes study visits to various public authorities and organisations.
4. Learning outcomes
The following learning outcomes are examined in the course:
4.1. Knowledge and understanding
On completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- demonstrate an overall understanding of and account for key concepts and theories of relevance to strategic Spatial Planning.
- explain how different public authorities and organisations view and pursue Strategic Spatial Planning.
4.2. Competence and skills
On completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- apply key theories and concepts in the analysis of applied Strategic Spatial Planning.
4.3. Judgement and approach
On completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- relate to the normative dimensions of strategic spatial planning.
- adopt both a user-oriented and a scientific perspective on Strategic Spatial Planning.
5. Learning activities
The lectures are conducted in English, while the language used in supervision and seminars may be adapted to the student group. Teaching is conducted through lectures, seminars, literature studies, and project work.
6. Assessment and grading

The course will be graded A Excellent, B Very good, C Good, D Satisfactory, E Sufficient, FX Failed result, a little more work required, F Fail.
The examiner may carry out oral follow-up of written examinations.
The final grade for the entire course is determined by the weighted average grade of the examination components included in the course. Any supplementary assignments (Fx) must be completed within the time frame during which the course is offered, unless otherwise agreed upon with the course coordinator. Otherwise, the course components will be graded as F, requiring a new examination. For further information, see the Study Administrative Regulations (BTH's local regulations).
The information before the start of the course states the assessment criteria and make explicit in which modes of examination that the learning outcomes are assessed.
An examiner can, after consulting the Disability Advisor at BTH, decide on a customized examination form for a student with a long-term disability to be provided with an examination equivalent to one given to a student who is not disabled.
