1. Descision

This course is established by Dean 2023-04-27. The course syllabus is approved by Head of Department of Software Engineering 2026-02-27 and applies from 2026-02-27.

2. Entry requirements

Admission to the course requires completed courses comprising 12 credits of programming and 6 credits in software engineering.

3. Objective and content

3.1 Objective

The course aims to develop the student's ability to independently develop a software solution to solve a practical problem. Students will select and apply appropriate software processes and methods to solve an engineering problem. Development work following a process of first understanding the problem, selecting and applying appropriate methods to design, implement, and test the solution. Students practice skills in project management, planning, leadership, and collaboration and communication with their team members and other stakeholders.

3.2 Content

The course contents include the following topics:

  • Introduction to development processes and models
  • Agile software development
  • Software project planning and management
  • Software Development Lifecycle phases including requirements engineering, design, implementation, and testing
  • Project documentation

4. Learning outcomes

The following learning outcomes are examined in the course:

4.1. Knowledge and understanding

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of problem understanding and requirements analysis.
  • Understand and describe how agile software development works.

4.2. Competence and skills

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Develop and test a solution while working as part of a software development team, using appropriate development methods and tools.
  • Collaborate professionally within a software development team by planning and executing assigned tasks, communicating effectively, and contributing to project outcomes.

4.3. Judgement and approach

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Reflect on the project progress in writing as well as orally.

5. Learning activities

Learning activities include lectures, workshops, reviews, and a team-based software engineering project. Lectures and workshops introduce theoretical concepts and contemporary topics in software engineering, while practical skills are developed through active participation in the project work. For a selected problem, students independently work on a software project starting with understanding and specification of software requirements. Students work on the planning, implementation, and testing of a software solution. Communication, supervision, reviews and feedback take place through scheduled activities and the course’s online learning platform.

6. Assessment and grading

Modes of examinations of the course

Code Module Credit Grade
2610 Project 6 credits GU

The course will be graded G Pass, UX Failed result, a little more work required, U Fail.

The examiner may carry out oral follow-up of written examinations.

The information before the start of the course states the assessment criteria and make explicit in which modes of examination that the learning outcomes are assessed.

An examiner can, after consulting the Disability Advisor at BTH, decide on a customized examination form for a student with a long-term disability to be provided with an examination equivalent to one given to a student who is not disabled.

7. Course evaluation

The course evaluation should be carried out in line with BTH:s course evaluation template and process.

8. Restrictions regarding degree

The course can form part of a degree but not together with another course the content of which completely or partly corresponds with the contents of this course.
