1. Descision

This course is established by Dean 2024-05-27. The course syllabus is approved by Head of Department of Industrial Economics 2024-10-10 and applies from 2024-10-10.

2. Entry requirements

Admission to the course requires 35 completed second-cycle credits in Industrial Economics and Management. English 6.

3. Objective and content

3.1 Objective

PurposeThe purpose of the course is for the student to develop their ability to independently conduct and report a master's thesis relevant to the subject of industrial economics and management.

3.2 Content

The course covers the following:

  • The main steps in a scientific study, including literature review, problem formulation, empirical data collection and analysis, as well as written and oral reporting and discussion.
  • The main parts of a thesis report, including problem discussion, purpose, method, theory, results, discussion/analysis, and conclusions.

4. Learning outcomes

The following learning outcomes are examined in the course:

4.1. Knowledge and understanding

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the important parts of a thesis report.
  • Explain key concepts related to a research study.
  • Explain how the purpose and research question are related to the choice of theory and method.

4.2. Competence and skills

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Conduct a scientific study, from research idea to final report.
  • Formulate a researchable purpose and relevant research question.
  • Search for literature in scientific databases using relevant keywords.
  • Present and argue for problem formulation, choice of method, theoretical foundations, ethical considerations, and conclusions.
  • Use theory and previous research as a foundation and support in their own study.
  • Communicate and discuss scientific work, both orally and in writingMaster scientific rigor and formal requirements.

4.3. Judgement and approach

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Critically analyze and develop knowledge of a phenomenon or a research problem.
  • Compile, critically evaluate, and discuss knowledge, previous studies, and results, including from an ethical and societal perspective.

5. Learning activities

In the course, students conduct a scientific study in the form of a master's thesis. Independence is emphasized, meaning the student is responsible for all stages of the research process. The student is expected to take the initiative in reading previous research and theory, formulating the problem, collecting data, and completing the thesis. Throughout the process, the student has access to a supervisor. Supervision is limited to the term in which the student is enrolled in the course. After this term, further supervision is only provided in exceptional circumstances. The course concludes with a seminar where the student defends their work and acts as an opponent for another student's work.

6. Assessment and grading

The course will be graded A Excellent, B Very good, C Good, D Satisfactory, E Sufficient, FX Failed result, a little more work required, F Fail.

The number of times a student can submit a thesis for grading is limited to three occasions. The reason for this limitation is that thesis is a resource-intensive form of examinationThe course information provided before the start specifies which learning outcomes are examined in each assessment element and the grading criteria.

The information before the start of the course states the assessment criteria and make explicit in which modes of examination that the learning outcomes are assessed.

An examiner can, after consulting the Disability Advisor at BTH, decide on a customized examination form for a student with a long-term disability to be provided with an examination equivalent to one given to a student who is not disabled.

7. Course evaluation

The course evaluation should be carried out in line with BTH:s course evaluation template and process.

8. Restrictions regarding degree

The course can form part of a degree but not together with another course the content of which completely or partly corresponds with the contents of this course.

9. Course literature and other materials of instruction

Literature is selected by the student in consultation with the supervisor. Suggestions for methodology books will be provided at the start of the course.
