1. Descision

This course is established by Dean 2017-11-29. The course syllabus is approved by Head of Department of Industrial Economics 2018-03-01 and applies from 2018-03-01.

2. Entry requirements

For admission to the course requires completed courses Managerial economics and strategy, 6 credits and Mathematical statistics, 6 credits, in addition, taken courses of 12 credits in Industrial Economics and Management.

3. Objective and content

3.1 Objective

In this course, the analysis of the relationships between competition, market forms and company strategy is deepened. The student is introduced to new analytical tools, such as game theory, which is used to analyze the strategy and strategic interaction between companies in different competitive conditions. A particular focus is on how production technologies allow for product differentiation, and its implications for the strategy of the company.

4. Learning outcomes

The following learning outcomes are examined in the course:

4.1. Knowledge and understanding

  • describe different market structures and explain the effects on pricing and profits.
  • understand fundamental competition policies.

4.2. Competence and skills

  • be able to use models to analyse issues related to market structure, firm conduct and performance.
  • be able to use common empirical techniques that are covered in the course to measure competition.

5. Learning activities

Lectures and group assignment. The group assignment is to be done in a group of two to three students with the outcome in the form of written report.

The course will be graded A Excellent, B Very good, C Good, D Satisfactory, E Sufficient, FX Failed result, a little more work required, F Fail.

For grading scale E on the course, E is required on the written exam and Pass on the written report. For grading scale D-A on the course, D-A is required on the written exam and Pass on the written report.

The information before the start of the course states the assessment criteria and make explicit in which modes of examination that the learning outcomes are assessed.

An examiner can, after consulting the Disability Advisor at BTH, decide on a customized examination form for a student with a long-term disability to be provided with an examination equivalent to one given to a student who is not disabled.
