1. Descision

This course is established by Dean 2022-11-15. The course syllabus is approved by Head of Department of Industrial Economics 2023-11-23 and applies from 2023-11-23.

2. Entry requirements

Admission to the course requires completed courses of 30 credits in industrial economics, or other technical field, and/or in business administration.

3. Objective and content

3.1 Objective

The aim of the course is for the student to develop knowledge of digitalization's business opportunities and business models. The course further aims to increase the student’s ability to develop and present digital business models and to collaborate in a virtual and international environment.

3.2 Content

The course covers the following:

  • Business opportunities of digitalization
  • Examples of digital technology and contemporary technology development
  • Meaning and components of business models, with a special focus on digital business models
  • Digital marketing and e-commerce
  • The process from an idea to a sustainable business model
  • Forms for virtual and international collaborations
  • Communication and role distribution in teams
  • Presentation of business models using digital tools

4. Learning outcomes

The following learning outcomes are examined in the course:

4.1. Knowledge and understanding

  • explain the meaning and components of business models
  • give examples of current digital solutions and tools and explain how they can be used in the context of marketing, communication and business development
  • identify and explain business implications of new and contemporary technology

4.2. Competence and skills

  • develop and present new business opportunities and business models based on digital technology
  • collaborate in virtual teams and projects using web-based technology
  • communicate and act in an international context and based on an assigned team role

4.3. Judgement and approach

  • critically evaluate different digital business opportunities and business models
  • integrate sustainability aspects in connection with digital business development

5. Learning activities

The course is an international collaboration, called "NetEconomy", which is conducted between several universities from, among others, Germany. The course is partly carried out via its own digital platform and with the help of various digital tools. The teaching takes place in the form of recorded lectures by international researchers and teachers, video meetings, individual and group assignments and discussion forums. During the course, the students develop and
presents a new business opportunity/business model linked to digital technology. The work takes place in virtual teams with students from other international universities and with other cultural backgrounds. The course consists of three parts: 1) BTH-specific course and subject introduction, 2) NetEconomy part 1: Knowledge phase and 3) NetEconomy part II: Project phase.

6. Assessment and grading

The course will be graded A Excellent, B Very good, C Good, D Satisfactory, E Sufficient, FX Failed result, a little more work required, F Fail.

The Project Assignment consists of both group-wise and individual assignments. The other two parts are individual.

The information before the start of the course states the assessment criteria and make explicit in which modes of examination that the learning outcomes are assessed.

An examiner can, after consulting the Disability Advisor at BTH, decide on a customized examination form for a student with a long-term disability to be provided with an examination equivalent to one given to a student who is not disabled.

7. Course evaluation

The course evaluation should be carried out in line with BTH:s course evaluation template and process.

8. Restrictions regarding degree

The course can form part of a degree but not together with another course the content of which completely or partly corresponds with the contents of this course.

9. Course literature and other materials of instruction

Scientific articles, written documentation and web based material to the extent of a maximum of 500 pages are added.
