1. Descision

This course is established by Dean 2018-05-28. The course syllabus is approved by Head of Department of Industrial Economics 2023-03-01 and applies from 2023-08-28.

2. Entry requirements

Admission to the course requires taken course Industrial management, overview course, 6 credits.

3. Objective and content

3.1 Objective

The course aims to develop the student's knowledge and understanding of the conditions and prerequisites for starting and running high-tech companies in general, and software development companies specifically. The course also aims to develop the student's ability to initiate and develop a software-based business idea.

3.2 Content

The course addresses entrepreneurship in software-intensive environments, known as ICT environments, as well as the conditions and prerequisites for starting and running high-tech companies. The course includes, among other things, the evaluation of ideas and intellectual property rights, partnerships with other companies, strategies for scaling up, and the importance of surrounding entrepreneurial ecosystems and engineering practices.

4. Learning outcomes

The following learning outcomes are examined in the course:

4.1. Knowledge and understanding

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • explain and discuss the entrepreneur's role in the development and commercialization of software
  • identify and describe key conditions and prerequisites for the startup process of a high-tech company
  • discuss the specific conditions and limitations of the ICT environment

4.2. Competence and skills

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • apply theoretical knowledge in the development of a software-based business idea
  • describe and reflect in writing on entrepreneurial processes in software-intensive environments, with support of and references to sources

4.3. Judgement and approach

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • critically reflect on entrepreneurship in software-intensive environments (ICT), for example from an equality perspective

5. Learning activities

The learning activities consist of lectures, reading and discussing course literature and scientific articles, as well as individual (or group) assignments. The student will apply theoretical knowledge in a practical task related to the commercialization of a software-inspired development project.

6. Assessment and grading

The course will be graded A Excellent, B Very good, C Good, D Satisfactory, E Sufficient, FX Failed result, a little more work required, F Fail.

The information before the start of the course states the assessment criteria and make explicit in which modes of examination that the learning outcomes are assessed.

An examiner can, after consulting the Disability Advisor at BTH, decide on a customized examination form for a student with a long-term disability to be provided with an examination equivalent to one given to a student who is not disabled.
