1. Decision

This course is established by Dean 2023-05-05. The course syllabus is approved by Head of Department of Spatial Planning 2026-03-25 and applies from 2026-03-25.

2. Entry requirements

Admission to the course requires 67.5 completed second-cycle credits in the main field of study spatial planning. English 6.

3. Objective and content

3.1 Objective

The aim of the course is for students to deepen their understanding of a current topic relevant to strategic planning. Furthermore, the course aims to develop students’ ability to work independently in identifying current planning issues and knowledge gaps, and to examine the selected topic from both an epistemological perspective and a professional perspective.

3.2 Content

The content of the course is determined each year by the students who will take the course and the teachers who will participate in it. At an early stage of the spring semester, the students and teachers identify a current and relevant theme within strategic spatial planning that will subsequently be explored in the course, which is offered at the end of the spring semester. Knowledge development takes place through an interactive process in which both students and teachers participate. As preparation for the course, the teachers produce background material to be used at the beginning of the course. The course has no predetermined outcome; rather, its outcome is shaped by the learning process that the course itself generates.

4. Learning outcomes

The following learning outcomes are examined in the course:

4.1. Knowledge and understanding

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding that some planning problems do not have a given solution.

4.2. Competence and skills

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Be able to identify current planning issues and knowledge gaps related to strategic spatial planning.
  • Be able to seek relevant information in order to illuminate, analyse and investigate concrete planning problems.
  • Be able to address complex planning problems without predetermined solutions.

4.3. Judgement and approach

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Be able to reflect on different ethical issues in strategic spatial planning arising from the theme studied.
  • Be able to assess and select relevant knowledge bases and appropriate approaches.

5. Learning activities

Teaching is project-based, and the language of instruction may be adapted to the student group. Students carry out a project, either individually or in small groups. Prior to each course offering, the course coordinator determines an overall theme within which students identify problem areas to work on. During the course, students select objects of study, gather relevant information, and apply theoretical perspectives. The course concludes with a summary report.

The examiner may carry out oral follow-up of written examinations.

The information before the start of the course states the assessment criteria and make explicit in which modes of examination that the learning outcomes are assessed.

An examiner can, after consulting the Disability Advisor at BTH, decide on a customized examination form for a student with a long-term disability to be provided with an examination equivalent to one given to a student who is not disabled.

The course evaluation should be carried out in line with BTH:s course evaluation template and process.

The course can form part of a degree but not together with another course the content of which completely or partly corresponds with the contents of this course.

The literature is adapted to the project the student is working on and is selected in consultation with the examiner.
