1. Descision

This course is established by Dean 2024-06-20. The course syllabus is approved by Head of Department of Mathematics and Natural Science 2025-09-17 and applies from 2025-09-17.

2. Entry requirements

Admission to the course requires 1.5 completed credits in Signals and Systems, Basic Course, 6 credits and taken courses Signals and Systems, Advanced Course, 6 credits and Introduction to Bayesian Statistics, 3 credits. English 6.

3. Objective and content

3.1 Objective

The purpose of the course is that students will be given an opportunity, in an engineering context, to solve applied problems and communicate the solutions in mathematical language through project-based work.

3.2 Content

The course includes the following:

  • Application of data analysis methods to engineering-related problems in project form.
  • Problem formulation, data collection, preprocessing, and analysis of real-world data.
  • Exploratory and statistical analysis using mathematical and numerical tools.
  • Interpretation of results, and evaluation of the reliability of the solution.
  • Oral and written communication of results using mathematical and technical language.

4. Learning outcomes

The following learning outcomes are examined in the course:

4.1. Knowledge and understanding

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • explain key concepts and methods in data analysis, including statistical and numerical techniques used in the analysis of engineering data.

4.2. Competence and skills

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • formulate, carry out, and document a data analysis project relevant to the engineering field.
  • apply appropriate methods for data collection, preprocessing, analysis, and modeling, and interpret the results.
  • present project results both orally and in writing, using clear mathematical and technical language.

4.3. Judgement and approach

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • reflect on choice of methods, and the reliability of models in relation to the problem at hand.
  • demonstrate the ability to work systematically, responsibly, and ethically within a group-based project.

5. Learning activities

The course is delivered through lectures, seminars, oral/written assignments, and a project. A web-based course platform is used to provide students with access to course materials.

6. Assessment and grading

Modes of examinations of the course

Code Module Credit Grade
2605 Written Assignment 3 credits GU
2615 Project Assignment 3 credits GU

The course will be graded G Pass, UX Failed result, a little more work required, U Fail.

The examiner may carry out oral follow-up of written examinations.

The information before the start of the course states the assessment criteria and make explicit in which modes of examination that the learning outcomes are assessed.

An examiner can, after consulting the Disability Advisor at BTH, decide on a customized examination form for a student with a long-term disability to be provided with an examination equivalent to one given to a student who is not disabled.

7. Course evaluation

The course evaluation should be carried out in line with BTH:s course evaluation template and process.

8. Restrictions regarding degree

The course can form part of a degree but not together with another course the content of which completely or partly corresponds with the contents of this course.

9. Course literature and other materials of instruction

Material from the department.
