1. Descision

This course is established by Dean 2021-12-13. The course syllabus is approved by Head of Department of Industrial Economics 2023-03-01 and applies from 2023-08-28.

2. Entry requirements

Admission to the course requires Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Bachelor of Science within technology, including an independent project and 5 credits in industrial economics, business administration, or the equivalent. Two years of professional experience after the degree in engineering/technical area, relating to leadership and management. English 6.

3. Objective and content

3.1 Objective

The purpose of the course is to develop the student’s ability to, with relevance for the engineering role, coordinate work in modern organisations. The purpose is also to deepen the critical understanding of the concept of leadership and be able to discuss alternatives to leadership.

3.2 Content

The course deals with historical and organizational contexts in which leadership processes are included. The context of the organisation is crucial, as are industrial, professional, cultural, societal, and ideological contexts. The type of leadership covered in the course, with relevance to the engineering role, is leadership in modern organisational contexts in both the private and public sectors.

Modern organisational contexts are often characterized by people voluntarily allowing themselves to be led in terms of understanding and interpretation of what is necessary and desirable to achieve. Interaction between leaders and followers is therefore central. The course also deals with social sustainability.

4. Learning outcomes

The following learning outcomes are examined in the course:

4.1. Knowledge and understanding

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • give an account of the development of leadership from a historical perspective
  • reason about connections between the organisation's context, leadership and social sustainability
  • discuss leadership and coordination of work in modern organisations

4.2. Competence and skills

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • define and use theoretical leadership concepts and expressions in a relevant way, considering the context
  • in writing discuss leadership issues with the support of and reference to sources

4.3. Judgement and approach

On completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • critically reflect on leadership issues based on different theoretical and contextual perspectives
  • critically reflect on the relationship between leader and follower
  • critically reflect on leadership and social sustainability ctivities

5. Learning activities

The course's learning activities consist of pre-recorded lectures, use of reflection material in the form of shorter lecture sections, literature and scientific articles and assignments.

6. Assessment and grading
